Thursday, January 26, 2006DUB PISTOLS REMIXING ROLAND ALPHONSO'S 'DETERMINATION' The Dub Pistols are currently remixing Skatalite Tenor Saxman Rolando Alphonso's composition 'Determination', Alphonso was one of Jamaica's most celebrated musicians with a career spanning over fifty years - from the developments of the ska rhythm (on the first ska recording Theophilus Beckford's "Easy Snappin" in 1958); to the early developments of Bob Marley's The Wailers; to his works with Jamaican music pioneers, The Skatalites. Alphonso was one of Studio One Producer Coxson Dodd's earliest session musicians and chief arrangers; and is famous for his arrangements of the ska standards, "Phoenix City" and "El Pussy Cat". He was nominated for two "Grammy" awards,"knighted" by the Jamaican Government for his contribution to Jamaican music and given a "key" to the city of Boston in the early 1990s. Rolando Alphonso sadly passed away in 1998. |
