DJ STIX DJ Stix
AKA producer/DJ Steve Hunt made his recording debut in 1997 on the 'High Street' album for
Kingsize Records
with the tracks 'Planet Circus' & 'Different Worlds', he received
immediate acclaim and went on to record three albums for the label.
Stix hails from the green lands of Hampshire and has dedicated every moment of his free time to the pursuit of excellence in his skills as a DJ and then producer. His first single release 'Everything' made it quite clear that he was a true talent. His unique style, a smooth blend of west coast hip hop & R&B with a strong UK breakbeat flavor set standard for things to come. In November 1997 he released his debut album 'Different Worlds', comparisons with the established names of UK Hip Hop production soon began to fly and interest in Stix really took off. 'Different Worlds' showed his abilities not only as a world class scratch DJ but also as a top rate producer able to mix up various styles. In 1998 he joined he became a full time member of the Dub Pistols and transformed their live shows, his DJ'ing skills were often the highlight of their numerous European and US tours. Stix' DJ'ing took him to the DMC championships and saw him demonstrating for Vestax and also playing as a solo artist at events such as 'Transmusicales De Rennes' festival held in France and the 'Guiness Blues festival' in Dublin. December 1998 saw the release of his second single for Kingsize 'Electric Blues' which tore up dance floors across the nation and received Radio One support from Steve Lamacq. You only need look at the reviews and DJ charts over the last few years to see that the press & DJ's alike are definitely on the side of this young producer. DJ Stix has gained respect from the music industry and record buying public alike, In 1999 the U.S market got their first taste of Stix's talents when he delivered a ground breaking remix of 'Dr. Greenthumb' for the herbal hip hop legends Cypress Hill. Stix now responsible for Kingsize Records best output, returned with his second album '2nd Nature', and built on the success of Different Worlds, the album explored a much darker side of the genre of laid-back, instrumental hip-hop beats. Stix used 2nd Nature as a means of displaying not only his selection of breaks but also his remarkable cutting and scratching skills. The patterns of "2 Turntables" and "Shit Kickers (part 2)" are great examples of his unique style. The album also tapped into the more uptempo elements of hip-hop with cuts like "Weapons and Rivalry" and "Electric Blues", which complimented the ultra relaxed Greek meandering of "Mary Jane Fonda" and the gentle piano of "Higher Level" providing further evidence of his skills as a producer. On Stix' third album "Soul Communication" his trademark brooding beats and warm melodies have been transformed into a complete hip hop journey, courtesy of featured rappers MC K-Two ( Infinite Cycle USA), PAC, Andy Cisco (who has supported Blak Twang with his band Shorty), and also Valu, Genie and Antidote (who are part of the well respected Thee Absent and also run their own Cafe Recordings label). Although Stix' endering modesty and down to earth attitudes keep his feet firmly on the ground he delivers beats with more invention and panache than DJ Cam, Kushti or Nightmares On Wax, and holds his own within the crowded and competitive downtempo field.
